Winter roads can be hazardous, and losing control of your vehicle is a real risk when ice or snow make driving conditions slick. Skidding is one of the most common dangers, but a few simple precautions can help keep you safe.
Tips for Safer Winter Driving:
Slow down: Reduce speed, especially before turns and curves, to avoid icy patches.
Steady steering: Navigate curves with gentle pressure on the gas and smooth, controlled steering—avoid sudden braking or abrupt changes.
Safe lane changes: Check mirrors and blind spots, signal early, and move gradually.
Watch for hazards: Ice, wet leaves, and shaded areas can increase the risk of skidding.
Anticipate stops: Slow down well before intersections, which are often slicker from frequent stopping.
Use gentle acceleration in snow: Avoid slamming the gas; maintain control with a light touch.
If You Start to Skid:
Stay calm. Steer in the direction of the skid until traction returns, then straighten the wheels slowly. If braking is necessary, do so gently to avoid locking the tires.
By driving carefully and being prepared, you can help reduce winter accidents and stay safe on the road this season. For any questions regarding your auto policy, please reach out to Rita at rburns@pdcm.com or (319) 296-7023.
