Medicare GLP-1 Bridge: What Medicare Members Need to Know

Starting July 1, 2026, Medicare is launching a new program called the Medicare GLP-1 Bridge. The program will give eligible Medicare Part D members access to certain GLP-1 medications through December 31, 2027. Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) created the Medicare GLP-1 Bridge as a short-term demonstration program to expand access to certain GLP-1 medications while it evaluates longer-term options for Medicare coverage.
What Is the Medicare GLP-1 Bridge?
The Medicare GLP-1 Bridge is a temporary CMS program designed to help eligible Medicare beneficiaries get access to certain GLP-1 drugs. These medications will be provided through a special program separate from regular Medicare Part D coverage.
Instead of going through a Medicare drug plan, CMS will manage the program directly. A central system will handle:
- Prior authorizations
- Claims processing
- Payments to pharmacies
This means Medicare drug plans do not have to opt in for eligible members to participate. The program is for eligible Medicare Part D beneficiaries. CMS has also created resources for providers, pharmacies, and health plans to help members access covered medications.
What This Means for Medicare Members
If you're eligible, the Medicare GLP-1 Bridge could make it easier to access certain GLP-1 medications starting July 2026. Patients should work with their healthcare provider to determine eligibility and complete any required prior authorization steps.
