PDCM Insurance announced September 19, 2013 that its Waterloo, Iowa, location was designated a Blue Zones worksite, demonstrating the company’s commitment to the physical and emotional well-being of its employees. The Blue Zones Project™ is an initiative that employs evidence-based ways to help people live longer, better lives. Brought to Iowa through an innovative partnership between Wellmark Blue Cross and Blue Shield and Healthways, the initiative encourages all Iowa communities to make healthy choices easier through permanent changes to environment, policy and social networks. PDCM Insurance is the first insurance agency in Waterloo to be designated as a Blue Zones worksite.

“We are excited and honored to be the first insurance agency in Waterloo Blue Zones to become designated, especially since the Blue Zones Project aligns so closely with PDCM’s mission and values,” said Chris Fereday, President, PDCM Insurance. PDCM Insurance is the only agency in the region to employ two health promotion and wellness consultant to design and implement employee wellness programs. According to Fereday, clients with wellness programs have realized cost savings in both health insurance and workers compensation premiums and a reduction in overall claims experience.

To achieve Blue Zones designation, 25 percent of PDCM’s employees in Waterloo completed a personal pledge to commit to small tasks that benefit their physical and emotional health. The company also completed an assessment to evaluate the current employer-based activities that support employee emotional and physical well-being. PDCM currently offers employees on-site biometric wellness screenings annually, as well as internal wellness educational programs and weight loss challenges.
