2009 Flood Awareness

The already elevated levels of snow through January have brought fears of swollen Iowa rivers this spring. Many businesses struggled in 2008 with not carrying flood insurance. Amid sobering flood predictions again in 2009, PDCM is recommending to our clients to strongly consider adding flood coverage and reviewing availability of back up of sewer.

Over the past 100 years, floods were the number-one natural disaster in the United States in terms of number of lives lost and property damage. Over 90% of all U S natural disasters include flooding. Each and every year, businesses in special flood hazard areas are six times more likely to be destroyed by flooding than by fire. Changing weather patterns, increased urban development, and the leveling of farmland have reduced the land's natural ability to absorb water.

Basic coverage for businesses is provided through the National Flood Insurance Program, or NFIP. These policies are relatively inexpensive. Rates for flood insurance vary based on the location, with the highest rates in the most flood-prone areas. Flood insurance requires a 30-day waiting period The time is now to consider purchasing. Please contact your PDCM representative to discuss options that are available to your business.
